Life & Work as an Artist ~ Lecture & workshop by German artist Astrid Köppe
The aim of this two-part lecture/workshop is the professionalisation of art students, fresh art school graduates and young artists.
Topics will be:
- finding a work routine as an artist
- art work development
- side jobs
- self-presentation (proper portfolios, CVs, resumes, online appearance)
- where to find information on galleries, art spaces, residencies
- how to find a gallery (and how not to)
- dealing with galleries/agents
Date: Sunday 8 March, 2015
Venue: Lostgens Contemporary Art Space,
3rd floor, 8 Jalan Panggung, Kuala Lumpur.
10 am - 1 pm
Astrid Köppe will talk about working as a full-time artist for 15 years now, including her experiences with artist colleagues, galleries, art fairs, art dealers and offer advice on common situations and issues in an artist’s life.
Q&A and open discussion encouraged throughout.
Opportunity of artist portfolio reviews.
Introduction to part II with task assignment.
1 pm - 2 pm
Lunch break with opportunity for discussion + first preparations for part II
2 pm - 6 pm
The participants prepare short verbal presentations with or without visuals to introduce their work. These presentations in which Astrid Köppe will act as the counterpart will be filmed, then watched together and discussed. The intention is to give the young artists a clear idea of the impressions they make - and how their conduct can be improved.
Participants should bring their laptops and portfolios (digital or print) if available, including CVs.A token attendance fee of RM 20 is to be paid to Lostgens.

Astrid Köppe is a full-time artist based in Berlin, Germany. She studied Fine Art at the Braunschweig School of Art from 1992 - 1999. Her artworks - mostly drawing, sometimes extended to installation art - are shown internationally in exhibitions and art fairs. She is affiliated with several galleries in Europe, the US and Asia.
In 2010 and 2011/12 Astrid stayed as artist-in-residence of the Goethe Institut in Kuala Lumpur, where she also participated in community art projects organized by the Lost Generation Art Space. Astrid taught Drawing at the Design Faculty of Berlin University of Arts and has held talks and workshops on contemporary drawing in South Korea as well as in Malaysia.
